At the heart of the Pilbara region, just south of the breathtaking Karijini National Park, sits the regional township of Newman. Home to some of Australia’s most striking flora, fauna and natural land formations, the rural centre was originally built to accommodate miners and has become one of Western Australia’s most attractive tourist destinations.
A desert oasis, surrounded by waterholes, Aboriginal rock carvings, the ancient Ophthalmia Ranges, Newman is a great regional centre from which to explore Australia’s Outback. A gem in the west’s crown, the region is typified by wild Mulla Mulla and Sturt Desert Pea flowers and the world’s largest open cut iron ore mine.

Newman has an arid climate, experiencing very hot summers and mild winters. The town measures some of Australia’s hottest summer temperatures – akin to that of Middle Eastern cities like Riyadh and Baghdad experience. Summer days generally always exceed 38°C. Monsoonal-like conditions begin in December and last until March, causing high humidity and heavy precipitation. Winter days experience temperatures between 20°C and 26°C, and very rarely dip below 6°C at night.

Dining
Newman has a varied dining scene, which caters for most taste-buds and budgets. Seafood, steak, pizza, pasta and vegetarian meals can be found at hotels, pubs and downtown restaurants.
Newman’s most frequented eateries are housed in local hotels. The Newman Hotel Motel features a restaurant famous for serving “the largest meals in town” and a café that prides itself in brewing “one of the best coffees in town”. The Seasons Hotel’s restaurant enjoys a Sunday evening buffet and carvery under the stars on the restaurant’s terrace. While Mia Mia House In The Desert is considered to house one of Newman’s most exclusive hotel restaurants, offering modern contemporary a la carte food, themed menus and buffet nights.
Like most small country towns, Newman is home to not one, but two Asian restaurants. Adding an exotic spice to the regional centre’s dining scene, Newman Chinese Kitchen Restaurant & Takeaway and Newman Thai cater for those craving something other than pub-style or takeaway meals.

Shopping
Despite the wealth that nearby mining operations generate, Newman isn’t regarded as a shopping hub. Most of the area’s retail trade is focused downtown at the Newman Boulevard Shopping Centre.
The shopping centre hosts 20 specialty stores – including Rockmans, Retravision and Tredways Shoe, as well as a supermarket, newsagency, bank, chemist, post office and cafes and takeaway stores.
Service providers such as a physiotherapist, panel beater, hardware suppliers, and hairdresser can also be found scattered throughout the town.
